ML Researcher: Yet Another, AI Will Take Your Job Story (Programmers Edition)

What is the point of this? Are they trying to make programmers wake up and smell the coffee, or do they have another agenda? The conclusion doesn't follow from the premise. You can't say that AI will take everyone's jobs and that AI will make splitting the atom look like child's play, and then... we must use AI? The natural conclusion from that line of thought isn't, "programmers must incorporate AI or die out". The posited general loss of employment across a vast swathe of industries would be so unprecedented as to not suffer such a reductionist conclusion.
