Ask HN: Should I wrap my HDMI/AV converter in tinfoil to protect from lightening

So I was in the garage and a strong lightening bolt struck outside. Not the house or garage, just outside. Somehow this caused two of my HTMI=>AV converters to stop working.

I'm going to replace them, should I wrap them in tinfoil to protect them in the future?

Example of the converter

By what mechanism would wrapping them in foil prevent damage from lightning?
