Soldiers will get 'freedom dollars' to spend at the US Army's new dining halls

I guess they are fashioning it after college dorm cafeteria, where on top of my thousand dollar a month rent, I was required to pay up front for food service, and then paid for food out of that fund, effectively incentivizing me to buy a pint of Ben and Jerry's every day, or else just lose that money forever.

So its a way to guarantee income for the contractor, by forcing employees to hand over a portion of their paycheck. I feel like it's somehow worse than paying the soldiers less and letting them eat for free, but I'm not an army psychologist

I'm amused by the obvious incentive for the contractor to make food less desirable so soldiers order less of it, but not so unpalatable that they complain. I imagine the contract specifies things like portion size and calories, but there's a lot of ways to dress up unnecessarily bland food as healthy.

> The dining halls are run by Compass Group USA, Inc., which the Army has contracted with to run its new facilities based on the company’s history of running airport lounges and handling the meal-planning for college sports teams, Mohan said.

Cool. You're gonna give us some idea of who Compass Group is, right? No?

Fine, I'll do it. Brb.

...

I see. Million dollar bribes for UN contracts, overcharging schools, listeria outbreaks, feeding horse meat to schoolchildren, slave labor, and "Britain's most heartless employer".

Glad they finally caught up to Air Force DFACs. Meal cards were always whatever you want up to a limit then you just pay cash if over

Overseas DFACs were all you can eat though so that was nice
